Trumpet and Saxophone Hymn (2025)
Microphones Used: Neumann U87
My Roles: Co-session engineer, Co-mixing engineer, Trumpeter and Saxophonist
Description: My friend Bradley and I booked Audio Studio B at the University of Michigan's Duderstadt Center to experiment with their surround sound mixing system which is done through the Dolby Atmos application. I wrote this hymn super quickly so we could record 12 layers (to justify mixing in Dolby Atmos at all). My work as an engineer was a bit more minimal on this project, however I was much more involved in postproduction, especially mixing with the Dolby plugins.
Areas for Improvement: The studio has not fully implemented the Atmos system (i.e, the overhead speakers aren’t functional yet. Ideally we would be mixing in a 7.1.4 system, but because it was purely surround speakers, it ended up just being a 7.1 system. Additionally, the preamp gain was definitely a bit high, as there is minor clipping.
